How is Blockhunters really like bitcoin?

Blockhunters incorporates so many of the core concepts of bitcoin. For example:

Mining: Blockhunters simulates the process of bitcoin mining every round by choosing nonces from a bag. The player who draws the nonce closest to the sum of the previous block wins; they collect a bitcoin reward and choose which transactions to fill the block with. There are even ways that players can increase or decrease their hashrate!
Maximum Supply: Blockhunters only has 46 coins – there will never be any more.
Halving: Rewards for successfully mining blocks are cut in half every 2 blocks.
Nodes: All players collectively verify transactions, similar to bitcoin’s decentralized network.
Mempool: In both bitcoin and Blockhunters, transactions wait in mempools until miners include them in a block.
Private keys: There are 10 unique private keys in Blockhunters.
Consensus: The rules of Blockhunters can be changed as long as 51% of the players agree!
… & more!

Bitcoin educators and casual players will both find opportunities to discover many of Bitcoin’s core concepts through the Blockhunters gameplay.

For curious players who want to go deeper, the game includes a factsheet that goes in-depth about how Blockhunters really is like bitcoin, and where it differs.

Why is Blockhunters such a powerful tool to orange pill friends and family?

Blockhunters eliminates the need to read lengthy books about bitcoin, and provides an opportunity to engage tactile and visual learners in a quick (~30 minute) game.

There are also some things that just can’t be learned without having a little skin in the game – like how much it hurts to lose a private key, and the importance of privacy! Blockhunters simulates this experience!

Blockhunters also helps paint a more complete picture about why people around the world are using bitcoin. In a world filled with misinformation, Blockhunters helps add some more context and illustrates some of the compelling global use cases for this freedom technology!

I don’t know anything about bitcoin. Will I be able to play Blockhunters?

YES! Blockhunters is designed to be able to be played by total beginners, and is a great board game whether you’re interested in learning about bitcoin or not.

Can I play Blockhunters with kids under the age of 14?

YES! Although the game was originally designed for ages 14+, some simple modifications can be made to make it easier for younger children.

For example, you can play the game without power cards, choose to make the mempool smaller, or even eliminate the memory component completely by keeping all the transaction cards in the mempool face up.

We’ve had kids as young as 7 enjoy the game!

Who created Blockhunters?

Blockhunters was co-created by Arnold Hubach and Emily Hughes.

Why did you make Blockhunters?

We set out to share the importance of the bitcoin revolution with our friends and family, but their eyes often glazed over when we talked about technical terms like bitcoin mining, nodes, nonces, private keys, halving events, or the mempool. That’s when we realized that a bitcoin-themed board game could be a fun and effective way to simplify these complex concepts and make learning about bitcoin engaging for everyone! We’re also passionate about showing that bitcoin is far more than just an investment tool—it’s a groundbreaking freedom technology empowering people worldwide. That’s why we included inspiring real-world bitcoin stories in Blockhunters to showcase its true potential.
